The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates
5.0

I wanted to go along, so I did. Coates showed me a world where the grinding abuses of slavery were momentarily lightened not by mercy, but by the inherent beauty of the enslaved. Nevermind the magic, the narrator's week spent refinishing his grandfather's dresser was a call to spirit and ancestors. That those ancestors stayed deaf was never Coates' fault. They are listening now.
