thucydides_groupie 's review for:
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
by Mark Twain
I'm so disappointed. "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is one of my favorite books, so I was really excited to read more about Huck.
This novel started off so strong. The first 100 pages were good! The story was interesting and it was very clear why this book was impactful for its time (anti-slavery and racism and all). But then the plot just fell apart.
I don't know why Twain thought it was a good idea to veer off the path nearly halfway through the book. But one minute it's a genuinely good story about a runaway slave and a boy from an abusive home. The next it's a satirical comedy show with obnoxious side characters, and unnecessarily overcomplicated plot devices.
Don't even get me started on the ending when Tom shows up again. That was just a hot mess.
