The Luminaries by Susan Dennard

2.0

This was a book without a plot.

It had interesting concepts, like this forest that pops up and creates/houses all these supernatural creatures... But it was poorly executed.
The pacing was horrible, you start off excited and intrigued by this trial that Winnie (main character) has to complete. In participating and once completed, her family will be welcomes back into the "Luminaries" again, after being labelled as outcasts. This important detail gets put aside immediately after the first trial. Instead we get a slice of life style episode. I actually don't remember what happened between the first and second trial, because it had nothing to do with the main 'plot'. It had something to do with Winnie looking for a gift for the friend's birthday.

I forgot to mention that a lot of detail on world building went into describing the types of trees in the forest.
And Winnie had this nervous tick when she would 'click' her teeth. It wasn't described any other way other than 'Click' or 'Clicking'. I cannot image how one can click their teeth, it actually makes me uncomfortable thinking how teeth could click.

There is a lot to say about this book not picking a direction. I felt very disconnected.
I'm happy I listened to this as an audio book, I don't think I would have made it far if I had to read it.
