Hannah Green and Her Unfeasibly Mundane Existence
by Michael Marshall Smith
This reads like vintage Michael Marshall Smith. The sort of books I fell in love with in the 90s and early 2000s and that made me follow him through all his literary twists and turns (he has an excellent newsletter, by the way). But this also means there is almost nothing new to discover here. Once again there is a real-world manifestation of the Darkness That Lurks In All Of Us. Normal people get pulled into an unearthly conflict and there is a "dark underbelly" exploration of a certain space in the US (it used to be the Pacific Northwest, this time it's the area around Santa Cruz, where Smith lives these days). There are witty contemplations of the human condition that are fun, but now sound very 90s to me. All in all, a little too predictable.
