I’ve left this book without a rating on my shelf for two years since I first read it, because I wanted to write a review to express my love for it, but feel like everything I write is inadequate. I love this book very much, and think Aoki has written something refreshingly full of reality in the midst of a fantastical situation. An incredible balance and seamless blend of real life, fantasy and magical realism, supernatural elements, and science fiction; but at its heart, a story about real people with real wants, needs, desires and flaws; of queer love, of found family, of identity discovery and trans joy, and of belonging.
