The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

2.0

Honestly, this was a major disappointment. I'd heard so much hype about this epic adventure of trying to find a Welsh king, and then there was the whole 'if she kisses her true love he'll die' fiasco, and quite frankly, this book didn't stand up to the hype on either of those accounts.

For the first 200 pages or so, I was bored out of my mind - I feel like nothing even happened! Admittedly, there was a section in the middle when so much went down, and I was actually getting into the story... well that didn't last. I didn't like any of the characters, I didn't feel like I really knew any of them; so many people were introduced with not enough visual description so I couldn't even remember what they looked like! And where was all that 'forbidden love'? The entire blurb centres around this concept but it's hardly mentioned in the book, besides the beginning.

When I heard about the hunt for the Welsh king, I had imagined a Merlin-style fantasy where these teens go on an epic adventure, but it was the complete opposite. I feel that we didn't really find out that much about Glendower, we were only left with a billion more questions, which may well be answered in the rest of the series, but honestly, I don't think I'll be continuing with the Raven Cycle. It's a shame as this novel had such a fascinating premise, but sadly it didn't follow through.
