A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

4.0

Firstly, the world this book inhabit? Amazing
The way the world building is presented? Less so

New terms and concepts are thrown about at such a rate that you have no time to pick up by context, and the book seems to punish you for it. The first third of the book was a bit of a slog because of this.

Once you get into it though? Absolutely superb. The unforgiving grinder of the Scholomance grabs you and does not let go. Once I finally got to grips with the basics I was desperate for every bit of lore thrown my way.

Characters follow the same way, at first unlikeable and abrasive, but eventually you warm up to them but that's just how character development goes often.
