Fingersmith by Sarah Waters

4.0

"Fingersmith" is a hoot of a read. Fast past, slightly quirky, bold, brash, well written, and well plotted. This was a novel I wanted to read quickly to find out what happened, yet slowed myself down to enjoy the writing. Not many novels that can do all that

As many already know it is a Victorian Lesbian Romp. Water's knows her Victorian literature; Dickens', Collins', Elliot's, Stephenson's. even her Gaskell's and her Bronte's. Water can make a squawking, filthy London in living colour and also the country manner of Briar cold and gothic.

But Water's 19th century England is very modern, fresh and very now. This is not just a historical epic with bustles bonnets and torn corsets. The love story between Sue and Maud does help give this nowness, though the girl on girl action is slightly more forced than it was in Water's first novel 'Tipping the Velvet'. Though it is more the writing, that makes this novel crisp. It is fluid, sharp, clean, yet with tons of Victorian character.

If you love the greats, try Sarah Waters.
