All Our Yesterdays
by Cristin Terrill
I read this book obsessively. Robin tried me to ask if the dogs had eaten. I cut her off with a hand gesture and sharp correction: "READING!" That sort of all-consuming reading experience is something to treasure.
Now that I'm done, however, I can see some flaws. The most evident is that the book doesn't pass the Bechdel Test. It's a girl / boy / boy love triangle all the way through. (Alas, the boys don't have the hots for each other. That would have been fun.) I also have some plotting quibbles, but they're minor.
On the plus side, the book does a great job of exploring how a well-meaning, good person can become a monster. There are very few YA books with this kind of nuance around good v evil. Yesterdays doesn't take the easy way out. The characters grapple with this to the very end.
FYI - Despite being catalogued in the SciFi section of the library, this is a definitely a YA novel.
