I think Brian's Winter is my favorite book of the series. It's a different take on what would have happened if he hadn't been rescued by the end of the summer in Hatchet. While he still faced some incredible challenges, as he went through them, he seemed to gain wisdom and strength. There were a lot of times when he was fighting his desire to curl up into a ball and give up. However, at the end of the day, he marshaled his strength and kept moving forward. It's a wonderful read, and a lot of it is based on Gary Paulsen's own adventures. Highly recommended.
