Brute by Kim Fielding

I wanted a light, fluffy read and this was on sale and looked like exactly the thing I was looking for.

It started off with a lot of potential. Brute was very likeable as a main character. The premise was really interesting and allowed the scope for a nice romance to develop between the two main leads. Gray was also very likeable, although felt a little unrealistic at times. It was never fully clear to me how he managed to survive, living for a decade like an animal and seemingly not really having anything to sustain him or give a will to live, no family, no loved ones, no hopes or aspirations.

The set up was going strong, however, around mid-way it really tapered off for me. I felt like it never managed to take off. The build up was good, but then when the whole falling in love bit was done the rest of the novel failed to keep my interest. I just didn't feel there was enough tension in the book, everything got resolved too quickly and everything just turned out really peachy, really quickly. Considering we started off with two people in a very dark place, both both physically and emotionally maimed, it felt too easy when they suddenly got their HEA without much discernible effort.

SpoilerThat episode with the guard catching up with them read a bit like a caricature. Brute wasn't really so stupid as to believe they would take him instead - was he? And then boom, in the blinck on an eye, he saves someone's life and it's all sorted.
