The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

3.0

Three stars.

Nina Hill grew up with a mother who was always traveling and no other family. She loves to read, play trivia and work at a bookstore and is content with her life — until one day she finds out her father died and she has a whole family she never knew about. The story follows Nina while she goes on dates, reads her books, meets her new family and tries to save her job.

The writing in this book was only ok. I don't like when a writer tries to break down the barriers between the audience and the characters. For example "I'm sure you're probably wondering what happened to..." No. I was not wondering, and I definitely do not want you to speak directly to me. I feel like it takes you out of the book a little when that happens and I do not enjoy it. Additionally, there were wayyyyyyyyyyyyy to many storylines that were fighting for attention. I had heard good reviews about this book, but was sorely disappointed.

I did like the family and I liked the random trivia. The trivia storyline in itself was cool and I liked it but was surprised it wasn't a BIGGER part of the story. I felt like from the description, it would be a huge part of the story but it wasn't. I also liked the idea that she worked at a local bookstore and got to recommend books to her customers. That was cool.
