The Tryout by Christina Soontornvat
4.0

Don't we all want to be popular--or at least to fit in? Christina is determined to make the cheer squad, where the girls all know what to do and how to act, and none of them are called racist names. There's more to it than that--themes of friendships, learning more about yourself, figuring out who your real friends are--but a quick read. Useful and engaging for middle schools, especially where you're looking for AAPI representation in books.
