Fiela's Child
by Dalene Matthee
What a lovely book!
I read this on holiday in South Africa, and visited the area and especially Knysna (where a fair chunk of the latter part of the story is set) while reading it, which enhanced my enjoyment of it.
Based on the true story of a young boy split between two very different families as he grows up and tries to find his identity, it paints a vivid picture of the lives of its protagonists in the unforgiving and testing landscapes of the Central Southern Cape in the mid-nineteenth century. Both the settings and the characters are lovingly and skilfully developed, while the narrative keeps up a really decent pace throughout. The most important relationships really matter, and the pay off of the central 'love story' (if it can be called that) is satisfying.
Especially recommended for anyone traveling the Garden Route!!
