The Rich People Have Gone Away by Regina Porter
4.5
I went into this one super hesitant. There are really mixed reviews and its rating isn’t great. I was totally taken by surprise when I quickly realized that this one was working for me.
In the first days of the pandemic, Theo and his wife, Darla, decide to wait out some of the uncertainty at Darla’s family cabin. Days later, Theo returns to NYC alone. Where is Darla? What happened to her? is Theo responsible?
While Darla missing is definitely a plot point, interestingly, it’s not the main idea. Instead, Porter explores the various people around Darla. It’s a character study and she relays how their stories intersect. I think I’m totally a sucker for this literary style because I got sucked in fast and couldn’t put this one down.
Maybe it was a case of timing, but this is a book I’ve continually reflected on since finishing. I’m glad I took a chance because, for me, it paid off.
