A Nefarious Plot by Steve Deace
4.0

3.5 stars, rounded up

First, let me say this might have been 4 stars except for the writing style. This is supposed to be written by a demon as a letter/book of sorts to the people of the US. While that sounded like an interesting concept, it got very old very fast. There are only so many times on one page someone can read "bags of meat," "dead beat dad," "lonely carpenter." Over and over. While the message is good (more about that later), the overarching "plot" that this was written by a demon was distracting. The author would start a very interesting point but then stop to talk about how that idea it was thought of by a demon, supervised by Satan, revered by other demons, and carried out by humans. OLD REALLY FAST.

That being said, the rest of the book was very interesting. It is written through a strictly Christian perspective, but the author does not take sides in regards to Democrats or Republicans, liberals or conservatives, corporations or the people. Everyone is equal in getting beaten down. I will admit that I did not take the time to fact check all of the information presented, but I did research some of the things that interested me and, for those, the facts were there. There is a whole section on death, however, that I cannot say I completely agreed with bc I felt quite a bit was sensationalized or using specific individual cases to support a much larger picture.

If one approaches this book as thought provoking, it is a good read. This book can be weaponized and also taken as hard truth when it is not. It can offer a new perspective, whether you agree or not. More than anything, this book can start a conversation, but one that should be approached with respect, and like the book itself, those conversations might have to end with agreeing to disagree.
