Divergent by Veronica Roth

5.0

Divergent is a dystopian novel written by Veronica Roth. It was published in 2011 as the first book in a trilogy. The second book Insurgent was published this past year and the third and last one will be released this year. This book received the "favorite book of 2011 award" along with the "Best Fiction & Science Fiction award" on the 2011 goodreads choice awards.

The book is developed in a future city. This city is divided into five factions, those factions are based on the main attribute of the people that belong to that faction. There are abnegation, who are selfless; dauntless, who are fearless; candor, people who are honest; erudite, where belong the cleverest people; and amity, peaceful. The people that don't belong to any faction are factionless, those living off what people give to them. As everyone has a place, everyone has a duty in this city (world); abnegation are the ones that govern because as they are supposed to be selfless, they will think about the others on first place; dauntless protect the city; erudite are doctors, engineers, ect. At the age of sixteen people get into a test that will show them what sector is the best for them, after this they will go into a ceremony where they will choose on either stay in the faction where they have been raised or went to another faction.
Beatrice Prior is sixteen years old and her father is on the council that rules the city. Her brother Caleb is her same age and soon both of them will choose to stay or leave. In Beatrice test something goes wrong and the results are inconclusive, which means that she is divergent, what mainly mean that she belongs to more than one faction. In last second she chooses dauntless as her faction. She leaves her family and start as an initiate in the dauntless compound, while the initiation take place she will make some friends and some enemies. She will also learn things about her, the city where they live, and things about her family; she will also meet Four, a person that will have more things in common with her that what she suspected.

Divergent was a terrific novel; it has action, love, adventure, self-developing surrounding by politics and conspiracy. The world described is unique , although it feels a little incomplete because it just described a city then we don't know what is happening in the rest of the world. Divergent adds something new in the dystopia genre giving the people the chance to choose their future, usually in dystopias is the government who decide people's future. In addition to that, the book is fast paced and a page turner, everything happens fast and in a very short period of time. On account of this the love story between the two main characters develops too fast. This together with the fact that I couldn't understand Beatrice completely were the main flaws in this book, in my opinion.

All things considered, Divergent was an outstanding book that most people would love. I didn't really realize why everyone was so in love with this book until I read it. I gave it five stars and really can't wait to read the next book: Insurgent
