Mansfield Park by Jane Austen

4.0

Not my favorite Jane Austen by far. I've read every novel of her except Emma which is up next. Like many other readers, I found Fanny to be a seemingly passive and weak character and quite unlike many of Austen's other heroines. And maybe that was the point. There were, I am sure, many women like Fanny and their story should be told as well. When approaching Austen from our modern viewpoints, many things may seem problematic. I think it's always important to remember the context in which her books were written.

Despite not being a huge fan of Fanny, I was still pulled through the story on the strength of Austen's writing. Her social commentary of the time is always on point. Though I do have to say that not a lot happens in the novel until the last few chapters when scandal erupts and the denouement we have been anticipating comes together. And though she was not my favorite main character, I was pleased to see Fanny get the happy ever after she so desired.
