For decades only the magically gifted are allowed to live in the kingdom of ILYA. Those who are called “THE ELITES” who were given powers by a plague that took over the kingdom (if they lived through it).
Those born ordinary were shunned from society thought to be the carriers of the plague. They were banished from the kingdom never allowed to return regardless if their family were Elite. If an ordinary l was caught living in the kingdom, they were killed. Those who were harboring them were banished never allowed to return.

Paedyn Gray, is an Ordinary posing as a Psychic to blend in with the Elites. She lost her mother to the plague not long after she was born and her father was an Elite Healer. Growing up, her father taught her how to hide in plain site fooling the Elites. He was killed when Paedyn was young, and she had to use what her father taught her to survive in the slums of the kingdom and luckily met a friend who kept her secret and they helped each other survive in lower class of the kingdom by any means necessary which often involved stealing.
Paedyn‘s life takes an unsuspected turn when she unknowingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, Kai Azer, known as the kings enforcer. The one who kills the Ordinary people caught living in the kingdom. She was able to fool him into believing she had a power that is not easily detected and thought she was safe. When she finds out that her name was thrown into the Purging Trials, she isn’t sure how she can survive the brutal competition showcasing the Elites’ powers for the king and the rich high class Elite’s entertainment.
“I’m competing in games meant to flaunt the powers and strength of the Elites. The powers I don’t possess. Yet here I am, alive, and I intend on keeping it that way.”
She has to be smarter and more skilled to win this competition, or at least make it out alive. Getting the attention of prince Kai is not only distracting, but also dangerous.
“She’s bewildering as much as she’s beguiling. That pretty mouth of hers says one thing, but those ocean eyes say another.”
Can she resist the prince and his brother the future king? Both have taken an interest in her wild ways and she is just trying to stay alive. But Kai… is just as handsome as he is powerful. She unknowingly has put him under a spell and she is finding him hard to resist as well.
“I catch her watching me and our eyes lock, sparks dancing between us. She is the embodiment of a bad decision. The twin of danger and desire. The fine line between deadly and divine, and I can feel myself drowning.”
Unlike some of the reviews I noticed which are unfavorable, I loved this book. It’s not one that I will forget the plot two months from now like others I’ve read this year. Hunger Games vibes, but not quite the same.
It has a diamond in rough with danger, and intrigue. There isn’t any spice, but a playful slow burn romance that I just ate up. This had a cliffhanger that was somewhat expected, but it didn’t cause me to like it any less. I’m holding out hope for a little mention towards the end that hopefully will help in the next book and I am looking forward to reading it.
