Small Town, Big Magic
by Hazel Beck
DID NOT FINISH
In short:
I wanted to love this book for its witchy vibes, but I just cannot get over the incessant narcissism displayed by the main character. I read 40 rather boring pages of non-stop pontification on how accomplished, correct, and full of wisdom she is at a young age. We get it. Don't waste your time on this preachy, obnoxiously feminist junk.
In more detail:
It's always been my opinion that an author should throw me into another's shoes and take me on an adventure. I want to get lost in a character and their story. If an author is successful in that, I wouldn't ever know their politics. I don't care what an author's politics are. You're an author. Entertain me! Unfortunately this one really aggravated me with the constant feminist bullet points. It was to the point that it had nothing to do with the character, imo, and everything to do with informing the reader of how woke the author is. When I'm reading a book, it's to escape reality. I don't want any sort of political statements in a so-called "rom-com", which this shouldn't even be classified as.
I think the author was so focused on cramming feminism into the novel that characters and plot were thrown to the back burner and were severely lacking. The synopsis showed potential, but the story-telling was absolutely painful and fell very short. Character personalities were horrendous and exceptionally aggravating.
I don't see many truly enjoying this read. Reader be warned!
