The Reformatory by Tananarive Due

dark emotional medium-paced

4.5

This book was heartbreaking and visceral with horror that was more attached to the characters who were alive than the ghosts. While reading I was in constant dread for what would happen next to Robert and the other boys in the reformatory. The dread felt so real I had to put it down periodically because it was causing panic attacks.

The fact that the story was based on a real juvenile detention school for boys that abused and killed children is horrific. It definitely read like a story that needed to be told, especially for the author who was giving her relative a better ending than he had in real life. I really appreciate a historical fiction that causes a hyperfocus on the topic it was written and this was absolutely one.
