Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton

5.0

I love this book (and its sequel is even better). The main character is tough and a smart mouth, so I adore her.

Amani is looking for a way out of the desert death trap with its repression of women and happiness. (I mean, how could you be happy repressing women? It's more than that though. The place is dry and poverty abounds and there's no sign it's getting better.

She's also running from the possibility of an arranged marriage with her icky uncle (her mom's sister is his first wife) or some other lowlife that could pay for her.

Of course, the escape doesn't go quite as planned, nor do the rest of her plans. Wonderful twists in the story help soothe any disappointment caused by the hurdles that crop up.

Part adventure, part self-discovery, this book is easy to get lost in.
