The Marble Queen by Anna Kopp

5.0

I have had The Marble Queen on my radar for a while now and went into it knowing nothing except that the cover looked cool. This turned out to be a classic case of “You absolutely should judge this book by its cover” because Anna Kopp's The Marble Queen was fantastic!

Amelia and Salira complement each other perfectly to the point that they become an unstoppable unit by the end. I loved how they offered their strength to each other but also pulled each other out of the abyss during their darkest moments.

The mystery was really well done, especially with Salira. But the story in general was brilliantly planned out. The Marble Queen starts as a simple story of a princess who has to marry foreign royalty for the sake of her kingdom but the narrative complexity keeps increasing with each chapter.

I also just have to talk about the art. Gabrielle Kari did a wonderful job bringing this story and its characters to life. But the thing I adored the most was the depiction of anxiety and how Kari communicated it visually to the reader.

The Marble Queen is a fantastic debut by Anna Kopp that is filled with romance, heart, and quite frankly two of the most bad-ass women I’ve read about this year so far. I really hope there is a second graphic novel because I very much would love to know what Amelia and Salira will do next and I just need to see more of Gabrielle Kari’s art.
