A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
4.0
After reading some mixed reviews of this book I thought I'd share a critique from Magill's Master Plots.
"Hemingway combines austere realism and poetic language to present a powerful argument against war and to tell a touching love story at the same time. Possessed of the most remarkable time sense of the period between wars, his disillusioned temperament and technical skill have influenced a whole generation of writers. In spite of its hard boiled realism of detail and tragic ending, "A Farewell to Arms is nevertheless an idealistic book." It has been dramatized and made in to two movies and remains popular with many writers. Not for it's plot line or commentary on war, but his skill in simple line style and his way of embellishing in his work his own disillusionment is master work. Anyone looking just at the story line or commenting on his lack of deep thought has missed the point of the author and needs to step back think pause breath and relax. Not all books are famous for making you think. I've noticed some classics make me say to myself "What just happened did I read that part right."
