This is such a hilarious, fascinating account of a young man's stint volunteering at an animal rescue in Ecuador. Some of my favorite quotes:

-"There's even a proverb designed specifically to warn against it. It goes something like, 'Be careful what you wish for--you could end up with your fingers in a monkey.'"

-"I never did figure out the Ecuadorian urge to decorate the inside of a bus like a Christmas tree."

-"It was the size and shape of a battered fridge, and looked like it had existed in this space since before humankind crawled out of the swamps, coughed up green slime and breathed air for the first time."

-"It was the first time I'd been spanked by a tree."

-"Outside, I stood with Toby, eyeying the caged jaguar in awe. Even motionless, curled up on her side in a corner, the beast radiated power. When she was up and pacing the smooth, sinuous motions and rippling of the muscles beneath her sleek hide screamed danger."

-"I could just imagine the conversation... Lady: 'Mm, you're sweating. I like a man sweating...' Me: 'No, sorry, that's cow mucus.'"
