On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

4.0

"Find your voice. Make some noise."

Bri was a BADASS. Like damn, this girl really did what she did and took it on like every young woman should. Angie Thomas has now set the bar so high, that every time I read every one of her future novels, I'm going to expect a strong female lead from a badass that's trying to live her best life.

The gang violence is still relevant in this book just as it was with THUG. I'm really glad she decided to keep it in the same world and even same neighbourhood as the THUG, because that meant she didn't have to do too much world building and we focused on the characters and plot straight away. I was a tad bit disappointed to have Starr make a cameo. Thomas kept the events of THUG really vague in this book, and while that may be good, I kinda hoping to see what life was like after all that happened to Starr and Garden Heights.

No doubt, we tend to hear how hard it is to get into the music industry. Group that with being a young woman who is a POC, and you're already at a disadvantage. Thomas handled it brilliantly and I was really satisfied with the outcome. She showed the truth and didn't sugarcoat it for us, which is amazing.

Her writing is nothing short of amazing. She also came up with the raps that were needed in certain scenes and I actually went through the book and reread them after I finished. I enjoyed them very much.

The audiobook is beautiful. I highly recommend listening to it. Overall, I'm already craving another Angie Thomas book!
