Margery Sharp's gift for good-natured cynicism is a real treat, and this book provided several great examples. This is one of my favourite

She was a really beautiful woman of twenty-five or forty

Besides the laughter, though, there was keen observation and sense of humanity, as in this early passage

They warmed her up, put some life into her, and every time Winnie screamed it was as though the cold shadow of the grave receded a degree.

Another excellent read, confirming that Sharp is probably my favourite middlebrow author
