Past Tense by Lee Child
5.0

Past Tense is one intense read. In typical Jack Reacher fashion, he is in the wrong place at the wrong time...or more likely, in the right place at the right time. And in typical Lee Child fashion, there are several seemingly unrelated stories going on that weave together seamlessly into an edge of your seat climactic ending. Jack Reacher is just passing through a small town (surprise, surprise!) and comes across the town where his father, Stan Reacher. grew up. While researching and talking with locals, Reacher manages to severely unleash his brand of justice (surprise, surprise!) while protecting a victim. Meanwhile, in a neighboring town, there are strange goings-on at a motel between the proprietor(s) and guests (Patty and Shorty, from Canada). Lee Child does an amazing job with these scenes and will have you wondering: a) what do Patty and Shorty have in their suitcase? b) what nefarious dealings are the motel owners up to, or are they genuinely trying to help? It is quite the roller coaster throughout as Lee Child lets this slowly and perfectly develop.

Jack Reacher is amazingly Reacherish in this book and there are the quintessential scenes of him going up against one bad guy; him going up against several bad guys; him going up against anyone who stands in his way of truth and justice and the American (and Canadian) way! As always, I found myself rooting for Reacher while trying to puzzle it all out against him. While several of these major things I figured out before Reacher (go me!), there were other minor ones that were a nice surprise along the way (i.e. what's in the suitcase). Very much enjoyed the character of Patty and even Shorty at times. The only lull in all of the action was about the midway point, though I would imagine it would be difficult for Lee Child to make census taking and birdwatching exciting!

I can't believe this is book #23 of full length Reacher novels. While there are many scenes that can get repetitive from book to book (Reacher punching people, eating at small town diners, helping small town law enforcement after they tell him multiple times to back off, etc), I still enjoy most of them and Past Tense was no exception. I eagerly await the next Reacher novel!
