Goblin Girl by Moa Romanova

3.0

Credit where credit is due, the sections of the book that discussed the MC’s anxiety and panic disorder were incredibly relatable. It forced me to face some realities about myself that I don’t love by virtue of the fact that I’m more similar to the MC than I would care to admit.

However, a big portion of the story is centered around the “relationship” between the MC and her patron, and I understand that the connexion was a way for Romanova to discuss the themes of anxiety and panic that are at the core of the story. However, I just could not get myself to care about the relationship at all—in any way. I can’t pinpoint what about it specifically was uninteresting to me, but I sped through the graphic novel with a general sense of disinterest because of how much space the relationship took up in the plot.

On a personal note, I also didn’t really love the art style. Obviously this is completely subjective, and this isn’t to say that the art style in and of itself makes the book “bad”. But because I was so thrown of by the character design, it made it hard for me to truly connect to the story.

I was generally detached from the whole thing (except in the specific fleeting moments that it called me out on my own anxiety and habits), so it made the reading experience altogether a bit boring. Overall, not the book for me.
