The Last Smile in Sunder City
by Luke Arnold
Its a mystery noir that borders on grimdark I absolutely had a blast reading in spite of the main character. That sounds bad But its not. I read many reviews talking about how insufferable Fetch’s perspective is and… THATS KINDA THE POINT! this book isn’t so much driven by the outer conflict but more as a deep dive character driven tale. Fetch is complicated and has obvious and severe PTSD. He self medicates on pain killers and alcohol and despite his efforts he constantly makes bad decisions even when his intentions are good. His perspective is cynical at best which makes his interactions with everyone extremely thick with tension. Fetch is a man with no hope. His view on the world reflects that. Fetch thinks the post magic world is hopeless and teetering on utter failure he thinks everyone sees it this way but nearly every perspective you get from his conversations with other characters contradicts this thought and so it makes Fetch seem Like the worst. This all isn’t a criticism for me but I do see why it is for some and by the end of the next book I could see myself getting tired of Fetch’s outlook.
The clear and easy comparison any book like this will get is the Dresden Files. And absolutely some will prefer Harry Dresden to Fetch and thats fine. But if you want a slightly darker and more character driven story then Fetch Philips is the guy for
You!
