four stars might be a little high, but the ending really packed a punch. I don't feel like I love this book as much as I loved some of her others. and I was a little disappointed she didn't try and find a way to work in in mick riva like she did to most of the other ones. for a while. I wasn't sure that Joan was the most compelling protagonist, though she did really thrive once she was in a loving relationship. all the stuff with Francis and her mom. Barbara, being pretty bad and Aunt Joan ultimately taking her in was touching even if it's not for me. I don't know if it was hard to relate to Joan, because I'm not a lesbian and I not living in a time when they had to really hide, or because I'm not interested in being a scientist, but that made the book feel a little bit more of a slog to me than most of our others. I kind of thought Vanessa had died at the end, but obviously teared up when she had it.
