The Shining by Stephen King
5.0
Well….FINALLY finished this! I’ve been wanting to read this for years and now that I finally have….whoa!
This was an absolutely outstanding read. I’m a huge Stephen King geek so I might be just a tad biased but I’m a little annoyed with myself because this is classic SK and I surprisingly never read this until now, and I’ve been reading SK for quite a while but never fully committed to reading his works full time until just recently. I’ve still got a long way to go so maybe I shouldn’t be too hard on myself after all lol.
Regardless, the best part I loved about this book were (unsurprisingly) the characters. For a King novel this story had a pretty low-numbered cast of characters. And I gotta say I loved the Torrance family. I genuinely cared for every single member and worried for them in their entire experience. Yes, even Jack. Actually, ESPECIALLY Jack as I found he was the most tragic of all the characters in this book. But I really enjoyed the Hallorann character. He stole every scene he was in in this book (to me, anyway).
As far as story goes, I found it to be extremely engaging and waiting to see what was going to happen next kept me in stitches. The haunting and creepy scenery throughout was very unique and King did such a superb job (but doesn’t he always?) of describing the action and settings in complete detail.
I’m giving this a solid 5 stars. I really loved and enjoyed this book in every way. It will stick with me for quite a while and will definitely be a reread at some point for me
