Five Broken Blades: The Epic Fantasy Debut Taking the World by Storm by Mai Corland

4.0

Thank you to Pan MacMillan South Africa for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland is a fantasy adventure that will sweep you off your feet and plunge you into a world of magic, danger, and intrigue. Corland’s world-building is top-notch, with a realm that's as lush and vibrant as it is perilous. From the icy peaks of the northern mountains to the shadowy depths of ancient forests, every setting feels alive and richly detailed.

The story kicks off with a thrilling premise: the five most dangerous liars in the land are summoned to assassinate the merciless God King Joon. These five blades – a hired hitman seeking atonement, a lovely assassin craving freedom, a banished prince with a dark past, and others, each with their own vendettas – must navigate their treacherous alliance to achieve a common goal.

Corland’s characters are complex and intriguing, each driven by their own motives and backstories. The magic system in this book is both unique and fascinating, adding layers of complexity to the story that kept me eagerly turning the pages. The interactions between the five assassins are charged with intensity and mistrust, as they can agree on murder and treachery but struggle to forge a true alliance.

The plot twists hit like a rogue wave, leaving you breathless and eager for more. The stakes are high, and only one can take the crown. Let the best liar win, indeed.

This is a thrilling start to a series and if you're craving a fantasy epic that will whisk you away to a world where magic and danger intertwine, Five Broken Blades is your perfect escape. Don’t blame me if you stay up reading all night – it’s that good.
