The Last Wish: Introducing the Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski

5.0

I have a really hard time getting into fantasy, but I loved this. The short-story anthology approach works extraordinarily well, and introduces the world, its rules, and its eclectic cast of characters in a way that never feel overwhelming, even though all of those things are undoubtedly very dense.

It’s also nice to read serious high-fantasy that doesn’t take itself so seriously. Sapkowski has a dry, clever sense of humor, and despite not all his material hitting the mark (bits of dialogue are a little cringey), enough of it does that I never had a problem getting sucked into it all. The characters are interesting, their conflicts compelling, and most importantly, I just enjoyed partaking in whatever they were doing.

Definitely going to be continuing with this series. And as someone who avoids long series’ like the time plague...that’s enough of a compliment to warrant a 5-star rating.
