All That Is Solid Melts Into Air by Carole Giangrande
5.0
This could possibly be the best work of CanLit I will read this year. It is certainly the best I have read so far. Set against the tragic morning events of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Valerie is coming to grips with her distant marriage to her husband Gerard while she wonders for his safety in NYC as well as that of their son Andre, who often works with clients in the twin towers.
The somnambulant Valerie wanders the quaint streets and ghostlike shops on the small French island of St. Pierre in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence (where time has appeared to stand still and an iron bell constantly tolls) where she is visiting family and attempting to sort out her feelings for her husband of over thirty years.
A magical work of fiction, full of imagery and subtle threads of the future/present/past entwined in a glowing narrative that will have you feeling Valerie's pain and confusion as well as her need to keep busy while she awaits any news regarding the fate of her loved ones.
