Midnight's Children
by Salman Rushdie
I do not think I have ever taken longer to read a book. I continue to be amazed by Rushdie's ability to put more in one sentence than most authors can say in a page. (Of course to be fair, some of his sentences ARE one page.) I enjoyed the story and admired the writing, and got part of what he has packed between the lines. I am still reading ABOUT the book to find the things I missed. It will be awhile before I have the courage to take on another one of his books. Maybe someday I'll try The Satanic Verses to see what the fuss was all about. I think perhaps the Fatwa was issued because the Imam got stuck in one of those Rushdie sentences and couldn't get out.
