Yinka, Where Is Your Huzband? by Lizzie Damilola Blackburn
3.0

I love reading books that take place in Lagos/Nigeria. I find the culture fascinating and the accents delightful. Here, the narrator was adorable. I loved her voice and the personality she brought to the story. I also learned more about Nigerian culture. Example "Where is your husband?" is similar to what a woman in her 30s might hear from a Grandma in America, meaning "why aren't you married yet? the clock is ticking!"

The story itself was just so-so with a lot of cliches. Overall, it's another story about a woman who loses herself and then gets herself back.

SUMMARY: Yinka is 30 (?). She thought she was about to get a promotion but instead is made redundant (laid off). Ouch. She's not feeling super great about herself. Worse still, her younger sister is also married, and now pregnant, and her younger (?) cousin is getting married... making all the other aunties/older women relatives press Yinka even harder about where is her husband? Yinka decides she WILL have a boyfriend by the time of the wedding.

But first, she has to run into her ex-boyfriend, and his brand-new, gorgeous American fiancee at an engagement party where she is feeling particularly frumpy and single. Then she has to meet someone she focuses all her attention on, starts to change so he'll notice her -- youknow, becoming an entirely different person, the person he would like, only to find out he likes her roommate (Ouch x2). She also is struggling to find another job, most likely because she's too distracted by finding a boyfriend. She also becomes at odds with her sister and cousin for various reasons. La la la... Eventually her best friend pushes her to get therapy and she comes back to herself. Finds out she wants a new career altogether and is happy being with herself. The end.
