The Seven Year Slip is one of those books where you just want to give all the characters a big hug.
It's been 6 months since Clementine's aunt Analea passed away, and in order to cope, she has been pouring herself into her publishing career. Clementine is now living in her aunt's apartment, which was left to her in the will. When she was a kid, Clementine's aunt told her stories about the apartment and how it was magical--sometimes, just when you need it, it will take you back in time. But Clementine is grown up now; she doesn't believe these stories anymore... until it happens to her. One day, she comes home to find a stranger in her apartment who is most definitely not supposed to be there, and the calendar is set to the wrong year--7 years in the past. In a very un-Clementine-like fashion, she invites the stranger, Iwan, to stay and puts herself and Iwan on a journey that will change both of their lives. They will both have to reconcile their past and present selves along with their core desires.
I love the romance in this novel! It did feel a little bit like insta-love, but sometimes, when you know you know. Clementine and Iwan's love story was so beautiful and even more complex due to the time travel element of their relationship. I loved the way they connected over food and a love for adventure. These two truly seemed as though they were made for each other.
A huge focus of this novel is on change. How, even though it can be extremely uncomfortable, it is sometimes necessary. Sometimes good. And sometimes, it's just neutral. We have to come to terms with change in life, in ourselves, and in the ones we love.
The Seven Year Slip is my first Ashley Poston book, but I'm already anticipating reading The Dead Romantics and her new release this summer. Emily Henry fans should definitely give Poston's work a shot. Both authors write contemporary romance novels that feel realistic and brings in life's complexities. Read this book if you want to shed a few tears but then feel like you're being wrapped in a warm, fuzzy blanket.
