The Sorrows of Young Werther
by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Brief take: This book is indescribably sensitive and poignant. It is no mystery how this book was able to be one of the earliest pieces of art to inspire the entire genre and historical movement in the arts that we today call ‘Romanticism’. This book is concerned with beauty; the beauty of life, the beauty of simplicity, the beauty of family, the beauty of emotions and vulnerability, and the beauty of art, among other things. The novel does not simply romanticize the blatant idea of tragedy, but tells us the complications, the clear flaws, the sadness, the introspection, and the regret of a truly tragic protagonist to the point where we understand the truly divine power of letting go. I would recommend this book especially to anyone in the realm of the humanities, or to anyone seeking insights into their own flaws and regrets.
