Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan
4.0

Putting aside my personal disagreement with portraying Captain Nemo as a hero and Land and Arronax as villains, Daughter of the Deep was a great read. It is a hidden world sci-fi story that is loosely based on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea written by Rick Riordan, so I was pretty much guaranteed to like it. Its character dynamics are already interesting on a fundamental level, and that is only added to by the natural way the cast's multicultural roots play into their individual personalities and narratives. My favorite character, Gem, is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which felt very vindicating to me, and I was pleased to find that Rick Riordan treated my religion with as much respect as any of the other religious and cultural backgrounds that the characters come from, especially since I wasn't particularly impressed with how he tackled similar themes in the Heroes of Olympus books. This may have been my favorite of his novels since the original Percy Jackson series.
