Into the Wild
by Erin Hunter
I first started reading this book series when I was around late elementary/junior high age, and I just adored them. My mom had to tell me to check out the next three books at a time because I was blowing through them so quickly.
Fast forward 15 years, and now I’m an elementary school teacher. I wanted to introduce my students to series that I used to read that they might not be familiar with, and I only planned on reading Into The Wild for read aloud, and then telling them there were more books to be read before moving onto the next. Reader, my students loved. This. Book. They all loved it so much they begged me to read the second one, and I’m a sucker for this story universe, so why not? We read the second, and they just keep asking me to read more and more of them. I was able to loop with many of my kids from last year, and they came back STILL wanting to stay in the Warriors world. We’re on book 3 of The New Prophecy.
Now, as an adult I have a whole new appreciation for our main character. The growth he shows, and his conviction to do what’s right, he’s just the epitome of goodness and I could go on and on about how much I love these characters. But the best review comes from one of my students. These books inspired him to seek out more books like this. A kid who entered third grade with little to no interest in reading for fun is now a 4th grader who is now such an avid reader I can barely keep him out of a book. I’m so happy these stories exist, and it is my daily source of joy to have the opportunity to share it with a new generation of readers.
