Hendrix paints such evocative scenes, really leaning into childhood nostalgia. This particular book was one of his strongest.
I went into this book expecting ghosts and was confused when it turned into an evil puppet story. I was delighted at the twist, but I was even more delighted when it was ghosts.
He does an amazing job exploring family trauma and secrecy, taking the reader through the stages of grief along with Louise and Mark in a way that feels authentic and still spooky. The body horror was visceral and gut-churning, but it was balanced with the complexities of family and memory. You question what is real from the get-go, and it makes the ending all the more worth it.
