The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler
3.0

Parts I enjoyed, others I really didn’t. The writing has visibly aged and a lot of the references/slang went over my head being that one, I’m not American, and two I wasn’t about during the 1930’s.

As a story it was fine, however at times it seemed that an immoderate amount of information was given with no time to digest or understand. Too many characters were being thrust to the forefront clouding the original plot lines. This led to confusing sequences with disappointing payoffs as the build was lacking.

The entire book hinges on the ending. While the ending was good, maybe even great. The rest of the book wasn’t at the level to command anything above a three-star rating.

Overall I wanted to like this book more than I did.
