Hunting Shadows by Charles Todd

4.0

To be reviewed

One of two Charles Todd books to be nominated for the 2014 Agatha for Best Historical fiction. This entry in the Ian Rutledge series finds Rutledge (and Hamish) tracking a sniper who has murdered two people with no clear connection. While I'm more familiar with the Bess Crawford series, which came out after the Rutledge series was already well-established, I've enjoyed the Rutledge books I've read. Like the Bess series, these historical mysteries are complex and well-researched, keeping me turning the pages to find out whodunnit. This book was well-paced and conveyed the sense of dis-ease surrounding the two murders that brought Rutledge to the English countryside, as well as the realties of shell-shocked veterans who struggle leaving their battlefield experiences behind. Although I have not read this series in order, I felt this book stood on its own as a stand-alone read and kept me thoroughly engaged from start to finish. While I'm partial to Bess, I do like the haunted Rutledge quite a bit and look forward to reading more books in this fine series.
