The relationship dynamic between Zhao Yelan (MC) and Yan Mingting (ML) is top tier and I really enjoyed their interactions - the bickering and ZYL's wit and YMT's silliness, the push and pull between them were so much fun to read. I LOVE an arranged marriage trope done right and ZYL and YMT's relationship is a good example of it. They were strangers who were suddenly wedded and although ZYL was opposed to it at first, YMT slowly but surely won over his heart. YMT was able to see the real ZYL and definitely fell first but ZYL fell harder, but in the end they both loved each other equally and irrevocably. I really liked how healthy their relationship was because they mutually respected each other and regarded each other as equals, way before they fell in love and even though they weren't initially happy with the arranged marriage.
ZYL and YMT made a really good pair because the former was good at politics and the latter was a military general. They were well-suited in terms of personalities as well because they balanced and completed each other - they couldn't live without the other. Speaking of this, the author seriously baited me into thinking that the story would be full of angst but I was so pleasantly surprised with the actual direction because it showed just how much ZYL and YMT had changed over the course of their relationship, how much they had come to care for each other, and how much they trusted each other.Honestly I don't think I would've liked the story this much if ZYL had chosen to fake this death, and I was so happy that he himself chose not to let go of YMT, to choose his happiness and the love and light of his life. YMT loved ZYL so much that he worked hard in order to change the public's perception of ZYL, and ZYL also was able to show his true self to more people as he was able to lean on YMT. Their whole relationship was so sweet and I didn't mind eating dog food every chapter after they confessed their feelings.
The plot was good and it showed the improved teamwork not only between ZYL and YMT, but also between them and the supporting characters. ZYL started out as a singular person, isolated from the rest, but over time and with his marriage to YMT, he became someone who was cherished by his family and friends. I really liked the found family trope and all the characters were so distinctive, with their own roles to play and none of them felt superfluous. Xiao Gao and Li Yucheng were the secondary source of funny scenes in the novel because they were so dumb. I especially liked how the author included strong female characters such as Zhong Yuehong (only female general), Gu Niaoniao (ZYL's hidden friend and source of information), Yin Pinglu and Zuo Ran (contributed to the success of many of ZYL and YMT's plans, AND they're a lesbian couple), and even Sun Muyun (a fujoshi 😂).
I liked the pacing too and I was thoroughly entertained throughout the story. I thought things would settle down towards the end of the story but in the last 20%, a lot of things happened but they were resolved quickly too, to reach a happy ending for the characters who deserved it.
