arggimapirate 's review for:
The Only Good Indians
by Stephen Graham Jones
This book gets an added star for originality - I'm not sure I liked it, but I have NEVER read a book like this before. It's bizarre, and gruesome, and transportive, and.... kind of escapes definition. The descriptive gore is fully horror, but it's also kind of genre bending? Rooted in Native American culture, storytelling, and modern day life, the backdrop feels both real and unfamiliar as a person who did not grow up on a reservation.
Not sure who to recommend this to - it truly defies comparison. I was sold on it being compared to Paul Tremblay, but I don't think that's an apt comparison. Where he does creeping horror based in reality, this is more like creeping reality based in horror?
If any of that sounds appealing or intriguing, give it a shot. It was worth the read, even if just to read something so singularly original.
