Immaculate Conception
by Ling Ling Huang
This was wildly imaginative and written so vividly that all senses were activated while reading. I can’t describe it other than a reading experience comparable to VR.
At the core this book is about Enka, a talented art student and her friendship with Mathilde, fellow art student, but already considered a genius. It’s about the ruthless art world and about jealousy. About the beauty of creating and the ugly when art becomes a competition.
What made Immaculate Conception even more interesting was that it was set in a world similar to ours but where advanced technology was applied even more unbridled, resulting in an examination on the impact of technology on art, originality, but also the social divide. But nothing could top the very human feelings of jealousy and envy. Enka is talented herself, but her self-doubt and never ending comparisons to Mathilde (and how she dealt with those feelings) were the ultimate highlight.
