The Investigation by Jung-Myung Lee

4.0

Beautifully written and memorable, "The Investigation" is rife with poetry, hope, and desolation. Though it is narrated by a young Japanese prison guard, the novel mostly follows the Korean poet, Yun Dong-Ju, and his fictional relationship with two Japanese prison guards who share his love for poetry.

The only reason I didn't give this the full five stars was because I found the author's constant literary analysis a bit overdone, as the supposedly illiterate Sugiyama and then the youthful Watanabe both miraculously analyzed poetry and literature on the level of a college professor.
