It is the late 1800s and Emilia del Valle is a woman living in California and she requests that she be sent to Chile to cover the war that is going on there. While she is there she would also like to find her biological father and his family to learn more about them. I like Isabel's writing and it is easy to read, but I just wasn't that into this story. I have to also preface that historical fiction books that are about wars are not my jam and that could be why I wasn't as interested. The war parts went on a little too long for me. It was interesting to learn more about Chile's history (I really know nothing about it). There is a person named Balmaceda (real person) that is in the novel who is a relative of Pedro Pascal and I just kept thinking of Pedro whenever his name was brought up (it was a lot!), haha. Also, Pedro is related to Isabel so connections all around!
