Michael is a forlorn Geology teacher going through a separation with his wife. He takes his pain to the country and goes for hours long treks alone. In an attempt to reintroduce him to a social life, one of his colleagues sets up a group expedition with two single women, Michael, another single male, herself, husband, and teenage son. They set off across the country in Northern England on a multi-day adventure.

Marnie is one of the single women. Recently divorced, she has also chosen to hibernate, spending the past few years in the solitude of her apartment, copy writing and getting drunk alone. Along the trek, shoulder to shoulder, something develops between she and Michael.

It’s a romance with lots of depth and tons of quippy lines. It made me laugh, wonder, and want to keep reading. The ending didn’t play out quite as I anticipated which made it even more enjoyable.
